Nipah encephalitis claims two more lives at RMCH

A women and a four year old girl died of encephalitis in Rangpur Medical College Hospital on late Thursday night and Friday. The deceased were identified of Jaldhaka municipality and sadar upazila of Nilphamari district. Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research officials, however, said the symptoms did not suggest the latest two deaths, besides two other deaths occurred on Thursday (10-2-2010), were caused by Nipah virus. ‘These people had been suffering from encephalitis but we cannot confirm whether it was caused by Nipah or not without conducting laboratory test’ said IEDCR director. The IEDCR collected blood samples of the four deceased for laboratory test.

Meanwhile, 3 persons from Rajbari district were admitted to Dhaka Medical college Hospital with fever from the fear of Nipha virus on February 10, 20111, as they had drunk raw date juice collected from their garden. But IEDCR director said, they were not infected with Nipah encephalitis as the symptoms did not match with Nipah virus infection
