People struggle to repair damaged embankment as unleashed Ichhamoti wreaks havoc

The flood protection embankment of Ichhamoti River collapsed without a hint at Shushilgata in Debhata upazila of Satkhira on thursday, 14 July, 2011.

Water gushing out through the 70-80ft damaged part flooded fish farms and agro-fields of surrounding areas. During the following high tide, the collapsed part expanded to about 200ft which resulted into saline water intruding and flooding 300 homes, 700 bighas of shrimp farm and about 500 bighas of crop fields in Shushilghati, TownSreepur, Shibpur, CharSreepur and surrounding areas.

People of the affected area struggled throughout Friday to repair the damaged part of the embankment as seen in the picture, but in vain. Unyielding Ichhamoti took away with it’s strong current all the mud and other components used for repairing the embankment. However, people are still continuing their efforts. All they need is a little external support.
